Meta Brings AI-Powered NPCs to the Metaverse

Meta is introducing AI-powered NPCs to Horizon Worlds. Developers will be able to customize the characters’ appearance, backstory, and how they respond to players.
Meta has announced new tools that will allow developers to create AI-powered NPCs (non-player characters) on the Horizon Worlds platform. The company stated that this feature will be available “very soon,” giving developers the ability to design characters using new generative AI tools.
AI Support for NPCs

With the new update, developers will not only be able to customize the NPCs’ appearance via the Worlds Desktop Editor but also add a backstory and set instructions for how the characters should respond to players. This means that NPCs will no longer be limited to a set of pre-programmed answers. They will be able to react to player interactions in a more dynamic and realistic way.
Meta emphasizes that this move is one of the latest efforts to merge its AI and metaverse visions. With the company’s Connect event happening in a few weeks, more details are expected to be shared soon about how generative AI is transforming Meta’s virtual worlds. For now, those who want to experience the new AI NPCs can check out the characters in the games Bobber Bay Fishing and Profit or Perish.
Furthermore, the metaverse vision is being shaped under the company’s Reality Labs division. This unit also includes smart glasses and VR/AR headsets. The Reality Labs division has not made a profit since the last quarter of 2020, with cumulative losses reaching $70 billion.
